Roman Missal & Lectionary

The Roman Missal holds the prayers of the Mass; the Lectionary holds the readings; the Book of the Gospels holds the Gospel readings for procession. All three are required liturgical books in a US parish, and all must be approved editions of the current texts. Editions here differ by publisher: Catholic Book Publishing, Liturgical Press, USCCB or Midwest Theological Forum. They also differ in binding (hardcover, cloth, imitation or genuine leather), size (altar or chapel) and language (English or Spanish).

A parish replacing its altar missal should choose an altar edition; the smaller clothbound chapel edition suits a side chapel or sick calls. Leather bindings from USCCB and Religious Supply Center last longer under daily use. The Liturgical Press Classic Lectionary Volume 1 covers Sundays; weekday volumes are sold separately. Deacons carrying the Gospel in procession can choose between the Catholic Book Publishing and Midwest Theological Forum Books of the Gospels. Parishes with a Spanish Mass need the Misal Romano, Tercera Edición.

9 roman missal & lectionary

Questions before you order

Which edition of the Roman Missal is current in the United States?

The Roman Missal, Third Edition, in the English translation approved by the USCCB and confirmed by Rome, has been mandatory since Advent 2011. Any altar or chapel edition from Catholic Book Publishing, Liturgical Press, USCCB or Midwest Theological Forum contains the same approved text.

What is the difference between an altar edition and a chapel edition?

The content is identical. The altar edition is larger, with bigger type and more durable binding, and is meant to rest on a missal stand. The chapel edition is smaller and lighter for side chapels, nursing homes and travel. Many parishes keep one of each.

How many lectionary volumes does a parish need?

The US Lectionary for Mass is published in four volumes. Volume 1 covers Sundays and solemnities, Volumes 2 and 3 the weekdays of Years I and II, and Volume 4 ritual and votive Masses. A parish with daily Mass needs all four; a Sunday-only chapel needs Volume 1.

Is the Spanish Misal Romano approved for use in US dioceses?

Yes. The Misal Romano, Tercera Edición, published for the United States in 2018, is the approved Spanish-language missal for US dioceses. It includes the proper celebrations of the US calendar. Parishes should not use missals published for Mexico or Spain at Mass.
