Candlesticks & Sanctuary Lamps

Altar candlesticks hold the candles lit for every Mass, and the sanctuary lamp burns before the tabernacle whenever the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Candlesticks here range from a 3 inch pair for a small chapel to an 18 inch stick for a high altar. Sockets are 7/8 inch or 1 1/2 inches. Sanctuary lamps are hanging brass fixtures with a red or ruby glass globe, on chains of 16 to 21 inches. All are brass; finishes are polished or lacquered.

Check the candle diameter first. Standard altar candles of 7/8 inch fit the small Will & Baumer and brass pairs. Candles of 1 1/2 inches need the Classical Church Goods or Roma series holders. The Roma holder also takes a paschal candle. For the sanctuary lamp, measure the ceiling height and the space beside the tabernacle. A 16 inch lamp suits a chapel; the 18 inch Autom lamp suits a parish church. Trinity's lamp can also sit on a stand.

Questions before you order

What socket size do altar candlesticks need?

Match the socket to the candle. Most parish altar candles are 7/8 inch in diameter and fit the small brass pairs here. Larger 1 1/2 inch candles, and paschal candles of the same diameter, need the 18 inch Classical Church Goods stick or the Roma series holder.

What candle goes in a sanctuary lamp?

Sanctuary lamps take a glass-encased sanctuary candle, usually a seven or eight day candle, or a shorter votive. The candle sits inside the red globe. Makers do not include candles with these lamps, so order candles sized to the globe depth, which varies by model.

How high should a sanctuary lamp hang?

Hang the lamp so the flame is visible from the nave but the globe can be reached without a ladder. Five to six feet from the floor is common. The lamps listed here come with 16 to 21 inch chains, so extra chain or a ceiling hook may be needed.

How are brass candlesticks kept clean?

Remove wax while it is still warm with a wooden spatula, or soften old wax with warm water. Lacquered brass, such as the Classical Church Goods stick, needs only a dry cloth. Unlacquered polished brass can be polished a few times a year with a non-abrasive brass cleaner.
