Mass Linens & Altar Cloths

Chalice Palls & Lavabo Towels

A chalice pall is the stiff square that covers the chalice at Mass to keep dust and insects out. A lavabo towel dries the priest's hands after the washing at the Offertory. Palls here are 7 in square, which fits a standard chalice cup, and come in 100% linen or a linen-cotton blend. Some are plain and some carry a Jerusalem cross or gold wheat embroidery. Lavabo towels, 11 x 17 in where listed, come singly or in packs of three or four, in linen or linen blends.

Check the chalice cup first; a 7 in pall covers almost any parish chalice, but a very wide cup may need a larger size. Plain linen palls from Christian Brands suit daily use, while the gold wheat palls suit feast days. The Jerusalem cross pall pairs with the matching purificators and towels. For lavabo towels, order one per Mass between washes, as with purificators. The Artistic Churchware blend towel is a quick replacement when one goes missing.

Questions before you order

What size chalice pall fits my chalice?

Measure the outside diameter of the chalice cup. A 7 in square pall, the size of every pall listed here, covers cups up to about 6 in across with a margin. Chalices with unusually wide cups, or ciboria used as chalices, may need a larger pall from a church goods supplier.

Does a chalice pall come with a stiffener?

It varies. A pall is either a single stiffened square or a linen cover with a removable insert. The individual palls here do not describe the construction, while the gift sets list a pall with insert. If the listing is silent, expect to check on arrival and buy inserts separately if needed.

What is a lavabo towel used for?

At the Offertory a server pours water over the priest's fingers into the lavabo dish, and the priest dries them on the lavabo towel. The towel is a small rectangle, often with a cross at one end. It stays on the credence table with the cruets and dish.

How are chalice palls washed?

If the pall has a removable insert, slide it out and wash only the linen cover by hand, then starch and iron it flat. A one-piece stiffened pall is sponged clean rather than soaked. Both should be stored flat in a drawer, away from damp, so the square stays rigid.
