Mass Linens & Altar Cloths

Mass Linen Sets

A Mass linen set gathers the four small cloths used at the altar: the chalice pall, the purificator, the corporal and the lavabo towel. Buying them as a set gives matching embroidery and sizes. Sets here differ by fiber, with 100% linen, 100% cotton, poly-cotton and polyester options. Designs include a small red cross, a Jerusalem cross, an IHS monogram, a Marian motif and a Tau cross. Palls run 6.3 to 7 in square and corporals about 17 to 18.5 in square.

For a working set on the main altar, the Church Atelier linen sets give full-size pieces. Each has a 7 in pall and an 18.5 in corporal. The Holyart cotton set has a smaller 6.7 in pall and suits a smaller chalice. The TALPGOD poly-cotton and BLESSUME polyester sets are starter kits for a mission chapel. The boxed gift sets from Trinity and Christian Brands add lace trim and scalloped edges. They suit a first Mass gift better than weekly laundering. Match the cross design to the parish's other linens.

Questions before you order

What is included in a Mass linen set?

Every set here has four pieces. The chalice pall is a stiff square and the purificator wipes the chalice. The corporal lies on the altar and the lavabo towel dries the priest's hands. Gift sets may add a pall insert. Cruets, a lavabo dish and a chalice veil are sold separately.

Are the sizes in Mass linen sets standard?

Roughly. Palls are usually 7 in square, and purificators and towels about 19 x 10 in. Corporals run 17 to 18.5 in square, which fits most parish altars. The Holyart set is slightly smaller, with a 6.7 in pall and 17.7 in corporal. Check your chalice cup against the pall size before ordering.

Is a gift set suitable for regular parish use?

It can be, but lace-trimmed and scalloped pieces take more care in washing and ironing than plain hemmed linens. Gift sets are usually chosen for an ordination, a first Mass or a priest's travel kit. For weekly use on a busy altar, a plain linen or cotton set with simple embroidery is the practical choice.

How should a linen set be cared for?

Rinse purificators and corporals by hand first and pour the water into the sacrarium. Then wash as the maker directs, usually by machine for cotton and poly-cotton and gently for linen. Starch and iron the corporal in thirds with the cross outward. Remove any pall insert before washing and store all pieces flat.
