Church Candles

Votive & Devotional Candles

Votive candles are the small lights parishioners light at a shrine, statue or votive stand as a sign of prayer. Church votives differ mainly by burn time. There are 10-hour and 15-hour lights for daily stands, and 6-day or 5 to 7-day candles for longer intentions. They also differ by container. Some come in clear polycarbonate cups, some in glass jars, and some are bare wax that must sit in a votive glass. Counts run from 36 to 288 per box.

Match the candle to the stand. Racks that hold loose votive glasses take bare 15-hour votives from Cathedral or D'light Online, which measure about 1.5 in across. Stands with shallow cups or sockets take the short Will & Baumer Brite-Lite lights, and deeper sockets take the 2.5 in tall version. A stand with wide holders for multi-day lights suits the Emkay 6-day Disposalite or the Root glass prayer candle. Count the sockets and how often the stand empties to set the box size.

Questions before you order

Do church votive candles need a glass holder?

Bare wax votives do. Cathedral states its 15-hour votives must be burned in a votive glass holder, and D'light Online sizes its candles for standard votive holders. The Will & Baumer Brite-Lite lights come in their own polycarbonate cups. Even so, the maker recommends placing them in a votive glass or similar container.

What is the difference between a votive light and a devotional candle?

A votive light is a short candle that burns for hours, usually 10 or 15, and is replaced often. A devotional or prayer candle is a tall glass or plastic candle that burns for days. Six-day and 5 to 7-day candles here suit stands built for that size, not ordinary votive racks.

How many votive candles should a parish keep in stock?

Count the sockets on every stand and note how many are refilled each week. A busy shrine with 50 sockets refilled twice a week uses about 100 candles a week, so a 144-count case lasts under two weeks. Smaller chapels with a 36-socket stand often manage with a box of 36 every few weeks.

How are votive glasses cleaned between candles?

Let the glass cool fully, lift out any spent cup or wax plug, and wipe the inside with a dry cloth. Stubborn wax softens in warm water. Polycarbonate cups are meant to be discarded after one burn. Check glasses for cracks before refilling, since a cracked glass can let hot wax through.
